How To Freeze Your Credit
You might feel powerless to protect your personal information and data when you hear about breaches at big corporations or data services. However, there are several proactive steps you can take to protect your data from cyber predators.
In addition to reviewing your bank statements, credit card bills, and online account activity regularly, consider freezing your credit report at the three largest credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax.
Freezing your credit is free and will stop fraudsters from taking out loans or opening credit cards in your name. A credit freeze locks down your credit report entirely, preventing creditors from accessing your credit report in response to new credit applications. This means no new credit accounts can be opened in your name while the freeze is in place. A credit freeze does not affect your credit score and can be lifted temporarily or permanently at your request, usually also for free.
To place a freeze on your credit report, contact all three of the following companies:
- TransUnion.com/freeze or (888) 909-8872
- Experian.com/freeze or (888) 397-3742
- Freeze.Equifax.com or (800) 349-9960
If you are concerned that your information has already been compromised, consider placing a fraud alert on your credit. A fraud alert is a notice added to your credit report that alerts potential creditors to verify your identity before opening new accounts or changing existing accounts. This makes it harder for identity thieves to misuse your information since creditors must take extra steps to verify your identity. A fraud alert is free to place and lasts for one year - but can be renewed.
To place a fraud alert, contact all three of the big credit bureaus:

- Equifax.com/CreditReportAssistance or (888) 766-0008
Reminders:
- Please be aware that after you freeze your credit, you will need to unfreeze – or “thaw” – your credit each time you apply for a new loan or credit card.
- Once your legitimate credit check is complete, remember to refreeze your credit at each credit bureau.
- Both freezing and thawing your credit needs to be done with each credit bureau individually.
